Root Canal Treatment

Inside a tooth is a small space named the root canal, within the root canal is the dental pulp made up of the nerves and blood vessels. If the dental pulp becomes infected a toothache or abscess may form. The cause of this infection can often be attributed to deep fillings, decay, tooth fracture or trauma. In some cases it may not be clear as to why the pulp has become infected.

To save these teeth we perform Root Canal Treatment which involves drilling through the tooth and removing the pulp with dental files. The canal is cleaned, measured, washed and shaped with these files and an anti-bacterial solution. Once the canals are completely cleaned they are sealed with a permanent root filling. These teeth can be structurally compromised following root canal treatment due to large fillings. To protect these weakened teeth a crown is recommended to ensure the longevity of the tooth. The alternative treatment of an infected tooth is an extraction and implant placement.

Local anaesthetic and modern painkillers are used to provide comfortable treatment. Usually painful symptoms improve once treatment has started. Your dentist will be able to give you an estimate of the cost of the treatment after thorough examination. The cost will depend on the difficulty and the time spent treating the tooth.
