Treating TMJ and Jaw Pain
These are the joints which connect the lower jawbone to the skull. Located at the sides of the head near each ear, these joints play an essential role in eating, speaking, and making facial expressions. In fact, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most frequently used and complex joints in the entire body.
There are numerous causes of jaw joint pains including:
- Clenching and grinding.
- Misaligned bite.
- Cartilage wear.

A few simple strengthening, stretching and relaxing exercises can help relieve TMJ pain. You can begin by gently massaging the painful area. This can help reduce tension and pain. It also makes it easier to exercise the joint and the muscles that surround it.
Splints are custom-made dental appliances that fit over either your upper or your lower teeth. By keeping your teeth slightly apart, pressure can be taken off then joints of your jaw and the surrounding muscles, allowing the area to relax. Splints also make it harder for you to clench or grind your teeth.
Dysport is a neuromodularor that can temporarily paralyze the muscles in the jaw area, keeping them from getting overworked. This can provide relief , and in turn reduce headaches triggered by grinding.
